An Art Project for Kids – Perfect for a Snow Day!
Easy art projects for kids are a great way to keep your child entertained while stuck inside on a cold winter day. This project requires minimal materials and cleans up easily. My two preschoolers enjoyed this project so much they asked to do it again the same afternoon. While we do give step by step directions for this art project for kids, the activity is about letting your child enjoy creating the work of art rather than what the end product looks like. Allow your child to explore their creativity and lead the project. In fact, my five year old added his own idea to the project and it turned out better than my original idea. Children have very creative ideas when given the the space and confidence to express themselves.

Catch a Snowflake – A Wintery Art Project for Kids
Materials:
- Construction Paper
- Oil Pastels
- Pencil
- White Paint and Paint Palette (We used a paper plate.)
- Snowflake Cookie Cutter
Steps:
Step 1: Have your child place their hands with their fingers together and thumb apart on a piece of construction paper. Trace around your child’s hand.
Step 2: Using the oil pastels, color in the hands on the paper to look like mittens. If you do not have oil pastels construction paper crayons would also work. These are crayons designed to show up on dark colored paper.
Step 3: Add your snowflakes with paint. We started with dipping snowflake cookie cutters into white paint and stamping on the paper. However, my 5 year old decided that he also wanted to add “dots of snowflakes” with his finger as well.
Step 4: Let dry and display!
An art project like this one allows your child to take ownership of their artwork with their own creativity. With minimal materials, this is an easy art project for kids to do while stuck inside on a cold wintery day!
